Chocolate in our Culture

Chocolate Apothecary is an amalgamation of the 1600's Chocolate House in Europe colliding with the Apothecary of the same era.

During this time period chocolate was being used both as a societal mark of culture and prestige as well as a treatment for many common ills. Chocolate Houses were frequented by the politically and socially elite as a gathering place to see and to be seen.

Apothecaries were traveling to far places of the earth to acquire medicines of all forms from many cultures. At this point the only form of chocolate known was "drinking or sipping" chocolates. This liquid was known to bring health and vigor along with aphrodisiac properties to the consumer. It was two hundred and sixty years later when an Apothecary would transform chocolate into a solid form, opening the way for a vast array of products.

Boycotts, religious restrictions, and wars would all be founded in this substance. It was a powerful "drug" that altered societal norms, national boundaries and people's minds. Its power continues to enhance experiences, relationships and memories.
